Description
The zinc-lead ore-body that has been found at Navan is worth many hundreds and perhaps thousands of millions of pounds. The mine is located near to a thriving small town, and is only 30 miles North... of Dublin. Obviously a lot of people have got a lot to say about such a development. The implications are enormous; social and environmental, economic and political. The programme is presented by Professor Ian Gass, Professor of Earth Sciences at The Open University, and the speakers include Dr. Oliver Waldron, Chief Executive for Tara Mines Ltd., Bill Dallas, Conservation Manager at Navan, Mr, S.P. Boland, Financial Director for Tara Mines Ltd., Mr. Justin Keating, Minister for Trade and Industry in the Coalition Government, and members of the Resources Study Group, a left-wing group pressing for State Ownership of Mining Resources in Ireland.

He takes up briefly the question of nationalisation of the mining industry in Ireland and gives his reasons for not being in favour. Ian Gass introduces the Resources Study Group, a group of graduates from Trinity College. Stephen Drury and members of the Resources Study Group discuss the wealth generating potential of the mines in Ireland. The group is critical of government policy in this respect, as the wealth generating potential of the mines is largely being given to overseas interests. Reasons why Ireland could and should exploit the mineral wealth for her own benefit brought out. The group lists ways in which this could be done.
