Description
Concrete has been defined as "a space-rilling material strong- in compression", but obviously there's a lot more to it than that. This programme looks at concrete from the viewpoint of th...e geologist who is interested in the raw materials needed to make concrete and how they are used. In the programme Professor Gass of the Open University talks to Mr. Hudson of A.R.C. gravel, Great Linford and to Dr. Ray of Tunnel Cement, Pitstone. Patricia McCurry, Research Assistant in the Department of Earth Sciences, talks to Mr. Kenny and Mr. Scott also from the above mentioned companies.

Kenny lists the advantages of dry over wet gravel processing. Jack Hudson of Amalgamated Roadstone Ltd, and Ian Gass discuss the economics and scale of the company's gravel production. Pat McCurry and C.B. Scott (Tunnel Cement Co.) discuss the factors which determine the siting of the cement manufacturing plant - mainly the availibility of clay and chalk raw materials. Shots of chalk being quarried while they talk. Pat McCurry and C.B. Scott at the Tunnel Cement Co. processing plant, Scott points out the various components of the plant and explains how they work. Film shots of each operation in detail: Homogenising the chalk, slurry. Firing slurry to produce cement clinker. Commentary by Pat McCurry and Scott continues to explain the processes. Mlichael Ray and Ian Gass at the Tunnel Cement Co. plant discuss the scale of operations there. They compare this with other U.K. and European plants. Pat McCurry with a small pile of ingredients which make vip concrete (cement, fine and coarse aggregate). She explains and demonstrates the way in which compression tests on concrete are conducted. Ian Gass with a piece of concrete. He discusses some of the advantages and disadvantages of concrete. (Its properties can be predetermined but it requires large amounts of energy to produce).
