Description
In this programme Dr. Fred Vine and his research assistant, Carl Poster, describe and discuss the meaning of their seismic refraction studies of the Troodos Massif. The programme closes with a disc...ussion between Dr. Vine and Professor Ian Gass on the interpretation of their aerial magnetic study of Cyprus. This study was designed to reveal linear magnetic strip anomalies hidden beneath the sediments which cover the rooks surrounding the Troodos Massif.

Footage description: Shots of a model of the ocean floor. Shots of the ocean surface. Shots of a topographical model of Cyprus. Commentary by Paul Vaughan explains the Gass, Masson-Smith hypothesis that Cyprus is a section of ocean floor which has been forced to the surface. Commentary describes the search for magnetic strip anomalies which was done to try to prove the hypothesis. Fred Vine sums up the results obtained. Fred Vine introduces Carl Foster who will describe the seismic survey work ( and results) which was done to try and prove the Gass, Masson-Smith hypothesis. Foster with a model of the ocean floor based on data from seismic readings. He describes the seismic work which was done on Cyprus and how this was compared with seismic data from ocean floors. Animated diagrams are obtained. Foster continues. He explains how a compensatory factor for water pressure was added to the Troodos readings. This simulated the pressure on rocks on the ocean floor. Shots of the apparatus which pressurises rock samples to simulate ocean floor conditions. Commentary explains how it works. Diagram aids. Foster compares the new results with ocean floor readings. Fred Vine with a topographical model of Cyprus. He describes a further seismic experiment which was done there. Shots of seismic equipment being installed and test being conducted. Animated diagram shows what happens during the experiment and how the readings are taken. Shot of an animated graph, shows curves for the layer velocities. Commentary explains significance of the curves. Vine shows an actual seismograph. Vine compares the refraction seismology readings from Cyprus with those taken of the sea floor. Paul Vaughan introduces Fred Vine and Ian Gass who will discuss the aerial magnetic survey of the island. Gass and Vine discuss interpretations of their aerial magnetic survey results and then sum up the results of both seismic and magnetic surveys. They discuss the significance of the surveys for the determination of the origin of the Troodos Massif. Vaughan sums up. Credits (over shots of Fred Vine collecting rock samples).
