Description
In tliis programme the spontaneous reaction of zinc with copper sulphate solution is used as the cornerstone to develop the concepts of half-cell reactions, reactions under spontaneous and electrol...ytic reaction conditions. This leads to the use of tables of half-cell standard electrode potentials in selecting oxidizing or reducing agents. The case study presents the problem of extracting chlorine from sodium chloride. Examination of the tables shows that no oxidant exists to oxidize chloride ions to chlorine which would be any less troublesome to make than chlorine itself. This leads to the use of electrolysis to effect the oxidation of chloride ions. The programme closes with an examination of the problems that must be overcome before a simple brine electrolytic cell could be used on the indxistrial scale.
