Footage description: David Roberts introduces the programme. Caption shows the equation for decomposition of 1,2 dichloroethane with the possible products of the reaction. Roberts lists the items which will be discussed in this programme. Roberts explains why a closed experimental system is used to study this reaction and then uses animated diagrams to design such a system. Roberts, with part of the actual apparatus, continues to explain how the system works. Charlie Harding with the complete experimental apparatus at the Chemistry Department, University College, London. He explains how the experiment is carried out on this apparatus and goes on the demonstrate the experiment. The pressure profile for the reaction is monitored by a pen recorder. David Roberts looks at the reaction pressure profile in more detail. He explains why an analysis of reaction products is needed to make sense of the pressure profile. Charlie Harding with a gas chromatograph. He injects a sample from the reaction and while waiting for the analysis, explains how the apparatus works. Several animated diagrams are used as aids. Harding examines a partially disassembled gas chromatograph and continues his explanation of how the apparatus works. More animated diagrams. Harding removes the recording of the results of the analysis from the gas chromatograph. Roberts looks at the recording (a pen recorder sheet) in detail. He explains what the peaks mean. Animated diagrams aid. Roberts goes back to the pressure profile. He combines the data from the analyses with the pressure profile to determine how reaction rate changes with concentration and then with temperature. Animated captions aid.
