Description
This programme looks at Elk Point reefs and evaporites comparing them with present day reefs in Florida and sabhka evaporites in Abu Dhabi in order to illustrate how a conceptual model can be const...ructed which allows geologists to see simple underlying patterns. The programme includes interesting film of the Florida Reefs seen from the air and underwater showing the various reef environments, sediments and rock building organisms. The reef is looked at from a geological point of view and it is expected that students will be able to use this information to help interpret fossil reef data.

Footage description: Dennis Jackson introduces the programme. Jackson looks at a composite geographical log and a litholog for Western Canada. He concentrates on the Elk Point (middle Devonian) period. Jackson next looks at a computer interpretation of the logs and reads out several of the measurements. Jackson, with a geological map of Western Canada which was compiled from computer data such as that examined above, points out its main features. He then looks at a model of the area around the Presqu'ile Barrier Reef of the Middle Devonian Elk Point Sea and points out its main features. Jackson shows some rock specimens from cores of the Elk Point time period. He particularly draws attention to the porosity of the rocks. Terry Scoffin uses a model of the present day Florida shelf margin to point out the important fasces variations found there. Several film shots (aerial and underwater) of the Florida shelf margin reef area. Terry Scoffin (voice over) points out the various features, particularly the corals and sediment types. Dennis Jackson, with the Devonian Elk Point basin model, discusses the similarities and differences between this and the present day Florida reefs. Jackson shows a conceptual model for the Devonian Elk Point area. He points out the main features of the model and then looks at some core samples from this area. Doug Sherman uses film and still shots to discuss his research in sabhka type deposition of evaporite minerals, mainly anhydrite, in the Persian Gulf area. Dennis Jackson sums up.
