Description
The mine at El Salvador in Chile is the subject of the porphry copper case study. In this programme Dr John P. Hunt talks about the intensive way in which they set about examining the El Salvador m...ine. Modern petrographic, x-ray and chemical analyses, as well as detailed geological mapping, allowed geologists to build up an accurate three dimensional picture of the mine, and to put forward a genetic model to explain the origin of this kind of ore body. The results of the El salvador study can now be used as a tool in the search for hidden copper deposits elsewhere in the world. In the second part of the programme Dr. Hunt visits a potential British porphyry copper deposit at Coed-y-Brennin in North Wales. This is the area that was propected by R.T.Z. in the early '70s. He examines outcrops at several places across the prospect and compares the detailed textures, mineralogies and alteration features with his knowledge of those at El Salvador in Chile.

Footage description: John Hunt introduces the programme. John Hunt, using several still shots of the El Salvador ore body and surrounding area, explains how the Anaconda Company went about mining the copper deposits. He goes on to explain why it was decided to do an intensive geological case study here. Hunt next explains how the geological mapping at El Salvador was carried out. Several shots of porphyry specimens illustrate his discussion. Hunt uses a cut away model of the Turquoise Gulch area of El Salvador to show the rock types present there. He traces the history of the major formations particularly the three principal intrusive ages. Hunt next looks at a cut away model of the same area, this time showing the sulphide mineralisation patterns. Finally Hunt looks at a third model of the same area, this time showing wall rock alterations with respect to the sulphides. Julian Pearce briefly examines a geological map of the Coed-y-Brenin area in North Wales. John Hunt and Julian Pearce on location at Coed-y-Brenin. The camera pans the area while commentary by Hunt describes the geological features. John Hunt, walking through the area, looks in detail at some of the outcrops. He examines the textures, mineralogies and alterations and compares them with those at El Salvador.
