Shots of individual atoms taken with a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) Albert Crewe discusses the limitations of conventional transmission electron microscopes (CTEM). He draws a schematic diagram of a CTEM on a blackboard as he talks. Crewe goes on to explain the basic principles' of the scanning electron microscope. Crewe describes the STEM in greater detail. He points out, semi-quantitatively, ways in which the resolution of this instrument can be made to match the resolution of the CTEM. Crewe writes and draws on a blackboard as he talks. Crewe explains why, although in principle both types of instrument have the same resolving power, the STEM microscope can achieve limiting resolution while the other cannot, draws a diagram on the blackboard to show how elastically scattered electrons are detected in the STEM. Crewe, again using the blackboard, explains how inelastically scattered electrons are detected in an STEM. Film shots of the STEM at the Enrico Fermi Institute, University of Chicago.
