Description
The French-American Mid Ocean Undersea Study (FAMOUS) project was begun in 1971. Its aim was to provide a detailed picture of a small area of the ocean floor where new ocean crust is being formed. ...Geologists in the past had had to sample the sea floor remotely but project FAMOUS enabled them to go down to the ocean floor in submersibles to see with their own eyes what new ocean crust looks like. In this programme Dr Robert Ballard describes how the project was set up, the technology involved and the sort of things he saw through the porthole of the submersible Alvin. His interpretation of those observations throws new light on sea floor spreading processes and is illustrated in the programme with an animated model.
