Description
After the oil crisis of 1973 a greater emphasis has been put upon the use of coal. This programme considers the present position of coal as a resource, how coal reserves are determined and what fac...tors determine how viable they may be. A very brief geological history of coal is given : and in the context of a Yorkshire Open Cast operation some of the factors involved in resource determination highlighted. Much British coal now contributes to electricity power generation, where one large power station is linked to several coal mines. Such a complex, at Longannet on the Firth of Forth, is described, and the latest development of a similar complex in Yorkshire shown to be benefitting from the earlier experience. Energy conversion of coal is, (despite modern improvements), still very inefficient. If coal (and poor quality coal at that), and other combustible carbonaceous material can be burnt efficiently then other better coal could be freed for generating valuable chemical feedstock. Fluidised Bed Combusters are just such a method, and the principle of their working is explained.
