He argues that the growth of fashion contributed to the economic growth of London in no small measure. The growth of luxury goods retailing in London is described by Drake. He also touches upon the rapid spread of the newspaper in 18th century London. The political importance of the coffee houses is touched upon. Over map of London of the 18th century, Michael Drake outlines the movement of the middle class into the fashionable areas and the retreat of the fashionable westwards. Drake touches upon the distribution of trades in the industrial areas of London and the housing erected for the working population. Maps and contemporary drawings are used as illustrations. Drake touches upon the wretched living conditions of the poor. Drake describes the flow of immigration into the city of London and the nature of the work usually found. He continues to describe the growth of London as a trading and economic centre. A map is used to show the location of the principal London markets.
