Description
Nikos Baltazzis of The Open University introduces Dr. Robin Morris of King's College Cambridge. Dr. Morris presents a model of the theory of the firm in both algebraic and graphical terms. He refer...s to the research of Dr. S.J. Prais of the National Institute of Social and Economic Research who has studied the process of concentration of firms during this century. With the use of The Open University computer, Dr. Morris shows how predictions can be made of the continuing trend towards a corporate economy. He shows that predictions calculated by Dr. Prais correspond closely to the observed figures, and ends by speculating on future trends towards further concentration.

Footage description: Baltazzis introduces the programme which will investigate the growing concentration of industry. Morris briefly runs through the situation, citing the work of Dr. Prais. Morris develops Prais's theory which looks at the growth of industry from 1900 on. Using graphs and his own symbols he expounds the model. Animated graph sequence as Morris investigates the model as developed so far. Morris extends the theory using a technique called the 'chance process'. Animated graph sequence accompanies his explanation. Sequence shows a computer printout of results being predicted over varying time spans. Morris summarises the results which reinforce the theory as expounded so far. He sums up on what the programme has shown. Credits.
