Description
This programme is concerned with the politics of revolt. The previous programme had examined the uprisings in the shipyards of Northern Poland in December 1970 and January 1971. It was concerned wi...th the form the revolt took and whether this was in any way determined by the Polish political structure. This programme looks at France in May and June 1968. It considers the revolt that began in Nanterre University and the Sorbonne and spread throughout industrial France. It particularly concentrates on the occupation of the Renault factory at Flins and uses this as a case study to examine the relationship of the groups involved in the occupation. By interviews with those who were present during the occupation and by the use of film taken at the time of the occupation, a picture is built up of the political structure through which the revolt was channelled. The programme demonstrates that although the revolt was partly sparked off by economic grievances, nevertheless the form the revolt took depended upon the structure through which it operated. This structure included not only student organisations and the major unions but also the French Fifth Republic. It was this structure that affected the direction of the revolt as much as the initial grievances. Like the previous programme, it is the relationship of revolt to political structure that is central to this study of France, 1968.
