Footage description: Nikos Baltazzis introduces the programme and Maurice Peston. The latter outlines the history of the discovery of the multiplier. Maurice Peston at the blackboard works through the text book example of the multiplier. Peston isolates the multiplier. At the blackboard, Peston now works through an example more closely based than the first simple example on the facts of the British economy. The multiplier is again identified, and the example is worked in great detail. Using an animated diagram Peston reworks the previous example but without great attention to detail. The example is worked to its conclusion and the multiplier for the British Economy identified. Peston analyses and explains an algebraic representation of the previous example. The explanation is detailed. Peston gives a hypothetical example concerning unemployment in which the multiplier is used to arrive at an economic prediction, i.e. an example of the theory's use in practical economics.
