| Footage description: | Geoffrey Edge introduces and outlines the subject of the programme. Edge explains the reason for the choice of Birmingham as the study area, and he briefly describes the city's characteristics. A Burgess land-use model shows an interpretation of Birmingham in terms of five zones. Edge explains and a sequence of film clips offers further explanation in visual form. Edge sums up the movement from zone to zone required by the Burgess land-use model and illustrated by the film sequence. Superimposed over a map of the city of Birmingham, the concentric ring pattern of Burgess's land use model is fitted to the actual land use in Birmingham. Edge moves on to the two areas studied, St. Pauls and Newtown. They are indicated on the map. Edge describes the areas briefly, using maps and film sequences as illustrations of his statements. Edge describes the industrial characteristics of St. Pauls. Edge now introduces Cyril Hames, a jewellery manufacturer formerly owning premises in St. Pauls but who was moved out to the suburbs. This is to serve as the first example of one type of industrial relocation which has occurred in Birmingham. Mr. Hames describes development of the jewel trade in the area, then goes on to give his reasons for his removal to the suburbs. Shots of premises and small factories. Edge discusses the problems of relocation for the small enterprise requiring workshop facilities and shows an example of the flatted factory that is one answer to the problem of providing low rent manufacturing premises. Edge now moves on to a second aspect of industrial relocation choosing as his example what has occurred in the neighbouring area of Newtown in Birmingham. Two maps, before and after redevelopment, show the changes brought about. Film sequences are used to illustrate the statements. Edge touches upon some of the difficulties that face local authorities in other redevelopment plans, and upon the problems that face small firms confronted with the compulsory purchase of their premises.
