Description
This is the 1st programme in a series of broadcasts to be transmitted while students are carrying out their own projects at the conclusion of the D301 course. There will be 5 television and 5 radio... programmes dealing with the subject of domestic service in the first quarter of the 20th century. The primary approach will be through the Oral Historical Method but this programme examines a variety of sources, both written and visual, that a researcher might use to investigate this topic. The programme is introduced by Professor Michael Drake and the topics covered are oral history, print and manuscript sources, fiction, statistical material, domestic architecture and photographic material.

The programme will also deal with other sources for study. Davidoff explains what uses she has made of oral history techniques, and where it falls down in domestic service studies. Dr. Harris looks at contemporary periodical sources and other tracts etc. written by interested parties. She also mentions official records, family archives etc. Various stills of publications she mentions. Williams discusses the uses of 'literature', especially to see what is not said about servants. He considers contemporary and near contemporary writing to be useful. Drake and Davidoff look briefly at statistical materials, surveys etc. Atkinson explains and examines some of the problems in using census reports. Dawes looks at household manuals, such as Mrs. Beeton, as source material. He quotes from one such manual. Other source materials are discussed - house plans, architectural features, photographs etc. Various stills accompany the discussion. Drake sums up. Credits over still of kitchen maid. |
