Description
This programme is one of a series of three which examine different work experiences in society. Based on the job of an airline pilot, the film follows Captain John Kelly and First Officer Bob Jones... of British Caledonian through a day's work routine. The film which is shot mainly on the flight deck of a British Caledonian 111 jet, observes the work routine of the pilots on scheduled flights from Gatwick to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Newcastle, Glasgow and then back to Gatwick. Commentary on the nature of the pilots' work experience is overlaid on the filmed routines, this commentary being given by Captain Kelly.

Footage description: Kelly outlines how they prepare for a flight. Shots of Kelly and Jones over flight plans etc. Extended sequence, shot in cockpit, of Kelly and Jones on run to Amsterdam. It shows them operating controls, taking off, landing, talking to ground control etc. Kelly in an interview looks at a pilot's training, how the in-flight operations are arranged etc. Various shots of flight deck. He explains the relationship of pilot and co-pilot, and how they relate to their work. Kelly continues by examining the role of instruments, the strenuous medical checkups and other aspects of the job. Credits.
