Footage description: The programme begins with a number of comments on the two roles of women, as wage earner and homemaker, and the effects they have. Holloway looks at some of the traditional reasons for employing women, inc. archive news reel of women at work in wartime. Women in a bicycle factory outline why they are working and some of the organisational problems involved. Shots of a works committee arguing over the special problems of part-time women. A group of women workers discuss their attitudes to the local union. Mettam, the personnel manager, discusses why women occupy the positions they do, and how this can change. York from the shop floor describes her experiences on a trainer's course. Roberts outlines the problems she encountered in her executive position. General problems of women in union work are described. The ACTT survey of women in the film and television industry is examined in detail by Benton. The BBC's position on women in technical areas is described by Morgan and Franc, looking at television studio and film location work. Some of the special problems which may affect managerial decisions are mentioned, especially for film location work. The next section deals with film processing laboratories. Shots of a union branch meeting discussing particular problems for women. Some of the difficulties over job mobility are examined with Toye describing the progress recently made. Women's attitudes to unions and union work are mentioned including shots of women on a demonstration and drumming up support from male unionists. Shots of TUC debate on the Working Women's Charter and Turner's reaction to job evaluation. Holloway sums up. Credits.
