Description
This is a film about why the activities in the City of London are concentrated within such a small area given that rents and rates in the city have increased such a lot since the war. It would seem... to make economical sense for some of the financial and trading institutions in the City of London to decentralise but this has not happened to a great extent. This programme looks at the reasons for this apparent inertia. After a short historical introduction the programme looks at the insurance industry in the city centring on Lloyds of London. It shows how one particular transaction is carried through, from the original enquiry to the broking firm near the Tower of London to the underwriters on the Lloyds floor. Members of the insurance industry explain why it is essential that their firms are located within walking distance of Lloyds. The programme illustrates graphically how most of London insurance firms are located around Lloyds. The programme shows the activities of another firm dependant on easy access in the city for its continued profitability. This is a firm of commodity brokers who, amongst other things, trade in tallow We see how this firm organises the buying and selling of tallow worldwide.
