Footage description: The programme begins with Peter Bryant and David Wood talking to some young children. Paula Masterman introduces the programme, explaining that she and David Wood will examine three explanations of where thought comes from. David Wood now discusses the views of the psychologist Piaget, who argues that thought is internalised action and that a child's thoughts are essentially different to an adult's, as he cannot apply logic. This discussion is interspersed with shots of a baby and David conducting an experiment with two young girls in order to illustrate Piaget's theories. The next views discussed are those of Peter Bryant, who argues that children are capable of making logical inferences. Peter Bryant describes his objections to Piaget's theories. He carries out an experiment with a small boy to show that if the circumstances are correctly explained children can think logically. Back in the studio David and Paula discuss the work of Jerome Bruner. Professor Bruner discusses his theories about children's thought and development. He stresses the transactioned nature of the relationship between a child and its mother, arguing that the child should not be studied in isolation. David and Paula now talk about the three theories and agree that the ideas involved are not mutually exclusive. The programme ends with some humorous responses the children made to the enquiries of the experimenters.
