Footage description: The programme begins by showing how Adam's behaviour seems to follow a pattern, he is tidy and symmetrical. There then follows a visual test designed to show if a person is field dependent or field independent. We see a girl, Nicole, taking the Children's Embedded Figures Test. Then three other children, Trevor, Hedayatullah and Colette. Their results on these tests, which measure personality style, are recorded on a graph. Nicole and Trevor are found towards the field dependent end of the scale, Hedayatullah and Colette at the field independent end. In order to see if this test can tell us more about children's behaviour, two of the children are shown at play in the school playground. First of all we see Trevor at play. His mother talks about his personality whilst we watch. Next we see Colette in the playground. Her mother describes her behaviour. The children's personality characteristics are marked up on a grid. This shows that there is definitely a relationship between style and behaviour. Another area which psychologists are working on is the difference between convergent and divergent thinking. We see children taking the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking. As a further extension of this we see a boy, Hanif, playing the role of an artist and describing uses for a tin can. His role-playing frees him to describe many more uses than he could previously describe. Next we see a group of children in a similar role-playing situation; again many more ideas are generated by them.
