This programme shows sequences from a drama workshop for maladjusted children, directed by Sue Jennings, Director, Remedial Drama Centre, London. The programme is introduced by Asher Cashdan, senio...r lecturer in educational studies at the Open University. The function of this programme is to get the student to observe the behaviour of a small group of six maladjusted adolescents. This provides the correspondence text on "The maladjusted child' with visual primary source material. The drama workshop is the setting for the observation of behaviour. Sue Jenning's technique of using role playing as a means of self examination and therapy for disturbed children is demonstrated.

| Footage description: | Sue Jennings, Director, Remedial Drama Centre, is seen with a group of boys in the studio, "warming-up" for a role- playing session. Voice-over, she explains the technique. Asher Cashdan introduces the programme, explaining that its main object is to throw light on the boy's behaviour patterns. The role-playing begins with Stephen playing himself and Dale as the school psychologist. They then reverse roles. Sue asks Tony to take part, he refuses. Stephen interviews Raymond. Sue plays a new boy "David" and Dale plays the psychologist. Raymond plays headmaster, Dale plays psychologist. They discuss "David" and decide to see his parents. Sue and Stephen play the parents. Dale and Raymond continue as before. Andrew is asked to take part: Asher Cashdan points out his defensive posture. Andrew plays David. Again, his movements are jointed out and the beginning of this sequence repeated. Dale and Raymond interview him. Sue begins a discussion on this section. She raises the question of "David's" home background. Dale plays "Davids" mother and Stephen plays David. Asher Cashdan points out how real this is to Stephen. Dale plays "David" and Sue his mother. They have an argument. "David" storms out. Stephen plays 'David's' father. They discuss the row. Asher Cashdan introduces the first minutes of a post mortem in which Sue questions particularly Andrew and Neil about what they would have done in David's position. Credits. Voice-over, Sue Jennings says that in role playing the actor is playing himself or others known to him as he perceives them. |
