Copyright using two studio mock ups, Nuala O'Faolain examines the reading ambience of the aristocrat and the Bougeoisie. She describes the importance of the circulating libraries like Mudie's and W.H. Smiths and describes their conscious roles as censors and arbiters or public taste. Otner examples ol Victorian literature, the periodical and the yellowback are shown, Nuala O'Faolain adding her comments. Nuala O'Faolain describes another popular Victorian form of publication, the part publication of a popular novel. The example shown is 'Little Dorritt'. Attitudes of the evangelicals to fiction are summarised by Nuala O'Faolain with a quotation from Charlotte Elizabeth Browne. The attitude of the utilitarians to the need for reading skills and the dangers of fiction is summarized. A studio mock up of a working-class home c.1890 is shown; Nuala O'Faolain describes the conditions and goes on to outline the growth of the Public Library and early reactions to it. Nuala O'Faolain examines the literature read by the working class and shows examples of it. Nuala O'Faolain examines the reading public of the 1890s and the social and educational circumstances and conditions surrounding its formation.
