Shots of Tolstoy walking in his estate. Henri Troyat describes Tolstoy's ideals and his excommunication by the church. Film of Tolstoy at the centre of crowds of admirers, and with his wife. His fame as moralist is described. Troyat now goes on to describe the relations between Tolstoy and the peasants, his origins acceptance of tradition and his rejection of this outlook when he became aware of the horrors of serfdom. Photographs of Russian peasants of the nineteenthcentury, voice over. Film featuring Tolstoy and peasant companions Troyat compares Tolstoy with Chekhov, both socially committed but with diametrically opposite backgrounds. Tolstoy's intellectual stance vis a vis the peasants is explained and film of Tolstoy in the company of peasants shown. Troyat goes on to describe Tolstoy's reaction to inborn poverty and his actions during the Russian famine of 1891. Photographs of urban poor shown. Having introduced Tolstoy's animosity towards the concept of ownership, Troyatdescribes Tolstoy's actions, his distributor of his land to his family and the disturbed family relationships that come about because of Tolstoy's actions and beliefs. Film of Tolstoy and his wife. Shots of Tolstoy in the family circle. Over shots of Tolstoy as an old man, Troyat describes the final break between Tolstoy and Sonia. Troyat sums up the programme and speaks of the difficulty to Tolstoy in reconciling thought and action, a fundamental difficulty of which Tolstoy was only too aware and for which he suffered.
