Description
In this programme, Sandra Millikin takes students on a guided tour of one of Wright's masterpieces, the Robie House, South Woodlawn, Chicago. The film shows, in this splendid private home built a f...or a Chicago industrialist, an example of Wright's "prairie house" style. It considers Wright's masterly organisation of space, the relationship of interior to exterior, and the great care he took with the choice and use ol materials. A stills sequence illustrates the evolution of the long, low, broad-eaved prairie house style with examples taken from the Chicago area.

Footage description: Opening shot of Frank Lloyd Wright's house built in Chicago for Frederick Robie. Sandra Millikin describes the area and shows some earlier Wright 'prairie' houses built during the 1890's and early 1900's: the Gale house, 1892; the Goodrich house, 1896; the Winslow house, 1893; the Hersley house, 1902; the Thomas house, 1901; the W.E. Martin house, 1903; and the Isobel Roberts house, 1908. These show the development of the style of which the Robie house is the culmination. Exterior of Robie house, built in 1909. Wide shots and detail. Kane reads Robie's description of his requirements. Sandra describes the layout of the house, the roofs and balconies, and the general absence of curves. Entering the house, she describes the hall, staircase and living room. Detail of fireplace. She discusses the use of oak panelling the ceiling and patterned wood grilles concealing services. Detail of light fittings. Description of Wright's original very heavy furniture, most of which has been removed. She examines the windows, balcony doors and the use of flower urns and trellises to relieve the exterior. Comment on the use of materials. Returning inside, she shows the dining room and compares it with old photographs showing the original fireplace. She briefly shows a bedroom and an old photograph of the playroom. She sums up over further film of the outside. In conclusion Kane reads an extract from the Dutch architect J.J.P. Oude's comments in 1925 on Wright's influence on the architecture of Europe.
