This programme introduces and demonstrates the characteristics of the early forms of flute, oboe and bassoon. Stephen Preston demonstrates a keyless Renaissance flute, two flutes from the Baroque p...eriod and a flute by Potter which shows its late 18th century development. He explains the differences of fingering tone and pitch. Claire Shanks plays a tenor shawn, a Baroque oboe from 1750 and a copy of an instrument by Delus of about 1780. William Waterhouse explains the development of the bassoon from the shawn through the dulcian to the Romantic instrment. He plays a solo sonata by Galliard on a four keyed baroque bassoon. the programme also includes two movements of a wind trio by Vivaldi.

| Footage description: | Owain Edwards introduces the studio programme. The musicians play a slow movement by Vivaldi for flute, oboe and bassoon with continuo. Edwards discusses the evolution of these instruments. Stephen Preston plays and discusses various flutes: a Renaissance transverse flute, a one-key conical flute and another by Bresson from the V & A, on which he demonstrates cross-fingering. Edwards introduces the shawm, which is played and discussed by Clare Shanks. She also uses a baroque oboe, copy of a 1750 Rottenberg, demonstrating the method of using the reed. Finally she plays a copy of a later instrument, a 1780 Delus. Edwards introduces the bassoon, and Bill Waterhouse shows a dulcean and bassoon from the early 1700s. The group play an allegro movement from Sonata No.3 by J.E. Galliard to demonstrate the bassoon. Finally Waterhouse demonstrates a late 18th century bassoon. Edwards concludes by introducing the finale of the Vivaldi piece heard at the beginning, omitting the harpsichord and viola da gamba continuo. |
