Footage description: Owain Edwards introduces the studio programme. The musicians play a slow movement by Vivaldi for flute, oboe and bassoon with continuo. Edwards discusses the evolution of these instruments. Stephen Preston plays and discusses various flutes: a Renaissance transverse flute, a one-key conical flute and another by Bresson from the V & A, on which he demonstrates cross-fingering. Edwards introduces the shawm, which is played and discussed by Clare Shanks. She also uses a baroque oboe, copy of a 1750 Rottenberg, demonstrating the method of using the reed. Finally she plays a copy of a later instrument, a 1780 Delus. Edwards introduces the bassoon, and Bill Waterhouse shows a dulcean and bassoon from the early 1700s. The group play an allegro movement from Sonata No.3 by J.E. Galliard to demonstrate the bassoon. Finally Waterhouse demonstrates a late 18th century bassoon. Edwards concludes by introducing the finale of the Vivaldi piece heard at the beginning, omitting the harpsichord and viola da gamba continuo.
