Description
In this programme Joseph Kernan, former Professor of Music at the University of Oxford, discusses the rapid development of the resources of the string quartet in the classical period, when Haydn, M...ozart, Beethoven and Schubert were at work. The Allegri String quartet, Hugh Maguire, Patrick Ireland, Bruno Schrecker and David Roth provide the musical examples and illustrations and the programme tries to show viewers how the simple compositional techniques which Haydn used in his early opuses were supplemented but never replaced by the more complicated devices like pizzicato and playing "sul ponticello" which later composers employed. The music played in the programme includes Haydn's Opus 1, No. 1 (1st and 3rd movements). Opus 33, No. 3 first movement), quartet K575 (2nd movement) by Mozart, Beethoven's Opus 59, No. 3 (1st movement) and Schubert's Opus 161 (1st movement). The Allegri String Quartet hnve also recorded much of this material on a stereo gramophone record produced by the Open University, numbered O.U.13. This record is called "The Rise of the String quartet". In a companion television programme (No.12) in this course the Allegri illustrate a programme about modern and contemporary string quartet writing.

Close-ups of members of the Allegri String Quartet. Kerman uses charts to illustrate the development of style from Haydn to the present. He begins an analysis of Haydn's first quartet, op.1 no.1, and the Allegriplay extracts. The Allegri play the first and part of the third movement of this quartet. Kerman discusses fugue and obligato writing, and chordal styles, illustrated with extracts from Haydn's Op.33 no.3. The Allegri play the third movement of this quartet. A roller caption shows the score superimposed. The use of prominent solo parts is illustrated by the second movement of Mozart's D major quartet K.575. Again, some of the score is superimposed. Pizzicato is illustrated in Beethoven's C maj. quartet Op.159, no.3, of which the slow movement is played. Finally Kerman introduces the first movement of Schubert's last quartet, Op.161, pointing out the features developed from Haydn and Mozart and those that are new. The Allegri play this. |
