Footage description: Trevor Bray introduces the programme, outlining the content of this and the following four programmes which deal with modern music. He introduces the Allegri String Quartet, who play bars 37-53 of the second movement of Debussy's String Quartet. Bray explains that this programme demonstrates the new ways in which modern composers use the resources of the string quartet. The Allegri play the opening of Penderecki's String Quartet no.1. Bray shows the unconventional score for this piece and Bruno Schrecker explains how the notation is interpreted. Bray remarks that not all modern composers use non-classical techniques. The Allegri play the opening of the third movement of Bartok's String Quartet no.4. Using a chart, Bray compares this with classical obligato style. The Allegri play the opening of the first movement of Bartok's String Quartet no.6, illustrating the use of octaves and semicontrapuntal style. The Allegri play Debussy's String Quartet, opening of the second movement, to illustrate pizzicato playing. Bray introduces another example: Bartok's fourth String Quartet, fourth movement, which also requires strummed notes, demonstrated by David Roth, and 'cracking' pizzicato. The Allegri play bars 45-101. Demonstrating the use of mutes, the second movement of Bartok's String Quartet no.4 is played. Bray explains the technique of playing sul ponticello, characteristic of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern: portraits of them. A passage from the first movement of Berg's String Quartet illustrates this. To show the techniques used by Bartok and Penderecki are often very similar, another section of Penderecki's String Quartet is played. Finally, the second movement of Bartok's Sixth Quartet, from bar 80-end is played and students are asked to note down the techniques used. A check list appears before the credits.
