Description
This is a film of a performance of "Circles" by Luciano Berio. "Circles" was composed in I960 and in this work, Berio has attempted to fuse the sounds of words, vocal production... and many different percussion sounds into a new synthesis. He has also introduced visual elements into the work. Each of the percussionists, surrounded by a circle of percussion instruments, describes circular movements as he plays, moving from one instrument to the next. The singer moves from one position to another on the stage and, in addition, has to direct the players. These movements within space, arising fromthe musical argument, form an integral part of the work. This is the first filmed version of "Circles" and the musicians participating are: Voice: Cathy Berberian; Harp: Sidonie Goossens; Percussion: James Holland & David Johnson. The programme is introduced by extracts from an interview with Luciano Berio.
