Footage description: Godfrey Vesey introduces the programme and the two guests who will join in the discussion of personal identity. He poses the first question to Shoemaker. Shoemaker and Lewis discuss a hypothetical brain transplant and the personal identity of the brain recipient. Vesey sums up the general feelings of the disputants. Vesey places before his guests for discussion a propos of personal identity, the hypothetical case of a brain transplant in which the brain was divided and half given to one recipient, the other to a second recipient. The case is discussed. Vesey and his guests continue by discussing the nature of the differences that exist between the memory involving self and the memory involving others. The nature of memory is discussed. The discussion of the role of memory in identity is maintained. The place of memory in identity and the difference between memory of self (involving debatably no criteria) and of others (implying inference and the use of criteria), remain the principle subjects for discussion. The main point becomes the proposition that no criteria are involved where knowledge of self is involved. Godfrey Vesey brings the discussion to a close.
