Description
In this programme, Sandra Millikin visits two buildings built for the same patron, the Los Angeles doctor, Philip Lovell, in the middle and late twenties. The programme concentrates on the so calle...d "Beach House" designed by the Viennese American architect, Rudolf Schindler, at Newport Beach, south of Los Angeles. Schindler has been neglected until very recently but this house, incorporating several devices for healthy living stipulated by the patron, shows his mastery of the 'International Style', with its vigorous and daring use of concrete and glass used in a way totally different from International Style proponents in Europe. For comparison, the programme also includes references to some of Schindler's other work, and to the "Health House" built near Hollywood for Dr. Lovell by Richard Neutra, like Schindler, an immigrant from Europe and an ex pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Footage description: Sandra Millikin describes the location of the house, at Newport Beach south of Los Angeles. She discusses the client, Dr. Phillip Lovell, and his architect R.M. Schindler. Portraits. General views of the house and location. Description and illustration of Schindler's house in King's Road, Hollywood, which he built for himself, and of two other buildings designed for Dr. Lovell: a ranch house near San Diego and a mountain cabin. Sandra describes Lovell's brief and the construction of the beach house. A model shows the three dimensional qualities of the original design. She examines the house. First the area beneath it, used as playspace and garages, originally; then the main living area and the use of clerestory windows. She examines concrete detailing, design of the bathroom with its 'marathon' showers, and the sunbathing area on the roof. Finally she considers the design of the open air sleeping porches requested by Dr. Lovell but eventually glazed to stop the rain entering. In conclusion Sandra considers the house Dr. Lovell commissioned from Richard Neutra in Los Angeles: probably the first example of International style architecture in the United States.
