Description
Hans Scharoun first emerged as an exponent of architectural expressionism after the First World War. Like many German architects of his generation he made the rapid change to the international styl...e in the twenties and thirties. But Scharoun never lost the sculptural and 'expressionistic' elements that characterise his work. In this programme Tin Bention discusses Scharoun's earlier development and looks at three houses he built. The Schminke house of 1933 which must be one of the last great international style buildings in Germany and two houses built as late as 1939 showing Scharoun reverting to vernacular forms and materials on the exteriors but creating some of the most exciting open plan interiors of the modern movement. Partly filmed in Berlin.
