Description
This programme allows students to see the work of the architects who built the "Siedlung" (exhibition estate) at Weissenhof, near Stuttgart in Germany in 1927. The white stuccoed, flat-ro...ofed buildings were designed by men who were to become famous later, men such as Peter Behrens, Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, J.J.P. Oud and perhaps best known of all, Le Corbusier. Their work at Weissenhof achieved rapid fame - some would say notoriety and it is generally taker, as the 'International Style'. Tim Benton visits a number of houses at Weissenhof and asks how far the architecture matches up to the architects ideal of the logical use of modern materials and the uncompromising and uninhibited search through their buildings for "new ways to live". Scharoun house looked at in detail.

Footage description: Benton introduces the programme on the Werkbund exhibition - the Weissenhof Siedlung. He outlines the split in the Werkbund. Contemporary pictures of work on the site. Quote from Muthesius on what he thought was wrong with the Weissenhof exhibition. In Stuttgart, Benton discusses the aspects he wants to investigate, especially that of providing cheap housing. He begins by using a model of the exhibition to see how it was laid out. Two of the buildings by Behrens and Stain are briefly outlined. The block of flats built by Mies van der Rohe is looked at in detail. Benton describes both internal and external design features. A row of houses designed by Oud is discussed. A quote from Oud is also given. Benton looks in detail at the interior - kitchen, washroom, main bedroom - and the importance of the flat roof. He contrasts its rationalisations with the gardens. Stain's row of houses is discussed. Benton describes the design and material faults. Again the use of industrial materials is stressed. More expensive housing by Le Corbusier is described. Benton outlines typical Le Corbusier design features. Finally a single house by Scharoun is described in detail. Benton looks back, at the exhibition and the wide range of its designs. The programme closes with a quote from Mies van der Rohe.
