Description
In this programme Dr. Geoffrey Baker visits the last three stations at the northern end of the Picadilly line, built in the early 1930s by the architect Charles Holden. He talks about them as stru...ctures which are perfectly fitted for their function and which at the same time symbolise what Dr. Baker sees as the essence of the Underground in the 1930s - and as a futuristic, highly efficient means of travel and as a form of fantasy. Each station is chosen for its particular attributes, Southgate for its integration of different means of transport, Oakwood for its striking use of the London Transport house style, and Cockfosters as a piece of concrete and glass functionalism which manages to integrate well with a semi rural environment.

Footage description: Shots of Cockfosters station - opening titles On the platform at Cockfosters, Baker outlines some design requirements for underground stations. The programme will deal with Holden's work on the Piccadilly extension. Prints of Sudbury Town and Brent stations. The older forms are compared with the new dynamic of the machine age. Baker begins to look in depth at the design of Cockfosters station, starting on the platform and the roofing. He continues with the concourse, the amenities of the central space, on out to the car park. He stresses the functional aspects of the design. The important influence of Frank Pick in the new designs for London Transport is discussed Using Oakwood station as his example, Baker explains the idea of 'house style'. A brief look at Guimard's designs for the Paris Metro. Shots of Oakwood from the outside as Baker describes Holden's design principles. Baker looks in detail at the booking hall, etc. at Oakwood and then proceeds to the platform where he describes other features. At Southgate station, Baker looks at how the overall design fits into the neighbouring architecture, shops, etc. Again Baker goes into the concourse which he describes, and then down the escalator. A quote on the futurist city by Sant' Elia is read, with shots from cabin at front of tube train. Credits are shown over more of these shots. The stations of Oakwood and Southgate are also featured.
