Description
In this programme Dr. Geoffrey Baker examinee the work of perhaps the greatest British architect of the last hundred years. He deals with two aspects of Lutyens as an architect, first as a designer... of buildings that are supremely English in their feel - Deanery Gardens fits its environment of a red brick Thames-side village to perfection. At the same time he sees Lutyens as a designer who is classical in the sense that his buildings are as logically and consciously planned as it is possible for them to be - a fact belied by their superficial appearance of mellowed red brick and tile and half-timbering.

Footage description: Baker introduces the programme. General shots of Sonning. Some of the influences on Lutyens style are looked at - the Arts and Crafts movement, the work of Philip Webb etc. Baker moves on to look at the house in detail beginning with the roofs. The effect of the vaulted entrance is described. Baker describes the courtyard with its paving and fountain, and occasional surprises. He continues through the main axis of the house, briefly describing it, and finishes in the garden. Baker poses two questions for the programme - can his work be taken seriously and how good an archtiect was Lutyens. Baker places him in his historical area and relates him to the incipient modern movement, with Mackintosh as an example. Using plans of the Deanery, Baker describes the main axes involved in its layout. The living room is examined in detail, with Baker emphasising the materials and structure and the important psychological effects. Again stressing the traditional style of the design, Baker looks at the staircase and upstairs gallery. Moving outside Baker continues to describe the use of materials, and the generally vernacular appeal, ending by looking at the axes points in the garden. Baker sums up Lutyens' work - shots of other houses. He stresses the values that Lutyens was trying to put across.
