Description
In this programme, Tim Benton looks at two flat developments of the 1930s in England. They will be the Quarry Hill development in Leeds (soon to be demolished) as an example of council housing, ado...pting the most advanced ideas both of construction and social engineering and a luxury block, High Point 1 in Highgate, London, the earliest example of the tower block used for housing in Britain. The programme will make a comparison between these two projects and will seek to show the great similarities between them, and the differences between them and continental examples of this period.

Footage description: Benton introduces the programme with shots of speculative working class back-to-back housing in Leeds. The Quarry Hill development in Leeds of 1935 is discussed. Benton mentions its basic design, its proximity to the Town City and continental influences discernible. Benton describes the estate in more detail, looking at the outside shapes first. Using stills from the 1930s, the method of construction is outlined. The interior of the flats is described, emphasising their compactness and the importance of the service aspect. The Garchey Refuse station with its laundry, ironing and drying facilities is described. Other external feeutures of the estate are mentioned briefly. Pointing out that the estate is being demolished, Benton sums up on the success or not of the scheme. As a contrast, Benton turns to a luxury block of flats, High Point 1, Highgate. He begins with the downstairs vestibule etc. Benton emphasises the aesthetic qualities of the block, designed in the grand manner. The well thought out service aspect of the flats is also described. Benton continues by outlining the design and fittings for an average flat in the block. On the roof terrace, Benton sums up on the seductive nature of this highrise building.
