Description
Large areas of our cities embody the visual inheritance of the Edwardian era and the opening decades of this century.In this programme, Stephen Bayley, Lecturer in Art History at the Open Universit...y, examines the design features of the world of the suburb. It was filmed in Ilford and centres round two case studies, comparing and contrasting an Edwardian terrace house with a 1920's built semi.

Footage description: Bayley briefly outlines the massive growth in houses over the last 75 years. Aerial stills of estates. The programme will deal with the semi-detached house in England from 1875 onwards, concentrating on Ilford as an example. Shots of houses in Ilford and early prints of Ilford late 19th century. Bayley outlines the growth of estates in Ilford, with maps of the area. He discusses the four factors shaping the Edwardian suburb. Various shots of housing in Ilford. A more detailed look at a particular estate built in 1898-99 is taken. Bayley describes the features of an individual house - the ornaments, doorways etc. on the exterior. He continues with the exterior - describing the windows, the cheap decoration and other aspects. He compares the decoration of the front with the rough, cheaper back aspect. The interior is described in detail looking at the individual rooms, the overall house plan, how it was originally built to include servant Bayley sums up on these houses. Bayley moves on to look at an estate of semidetached houses built in 1910, which reflect garden suburb influences. He continues outlining the growth of estates in Ilford post 1918, describing some features of the typical semi-detached house. Bayley looks in detail at a house built in 1928. He begins with the exterior, pointing out its lack of decoration. He also describes the interior with shots of the various rooms. Bayley sums up. He points out how the semi has been ignored as an architectural form, despite its obvious popularity. He feels it is an important expression of people's preferences.
