Footage description: John Golby introduces the programme, and discusses Hogarth's election cartoons of 1755. Four blown up prints are displayed on studio boards, and close-ups of details are shown as they are discussed. The four prints are: "Canvassing for votes"; "The hustings at Guzzledown"; "The election dinner"; and "Chairing the Member". Golby extracts from this study a number of questions generally relevant to studying elections in a particular constituency. These questions are shown in captions and elaborated voice over; they are also listed in the broadcast notes. Illustrating the application of these questions to a particular case, Golby introduces a study of the Newark election of I830. Print of hustings outside Town Hall. Poll results. Portraits of candidates; Michael Sadler, Thomas Wilde, Lord Truro, poster of Willoughby. He continues the discussion, using material found in the Gilstrap Library in Newark. Maps. Poll books. Agents' book. Coals tickets. Posters. Poll results. Golby concludes by raising general points of advice to the student following up his own project. Credits over Hogarth cartoons.
