| Footage description: | John Golby introduces the programme, and discusses Hogarth's election cartoons of 1755. Four blown up prints are displayed on studio boards, and close-ups of details are shown as they are discussed. The four prints are: "Canvassing for votes"; "The hustings at Guzzledown"; "The election dinner"; and "Chairing the Member". Golby extracts from this study a number of questions generally relevant to studying elections in a particular constituency. These questions are shown in captions and elaborated voice over; they are also listed in the broadcast notes. Illustrating the application of these questions to a particular case, Golby introduces a study of the Newark election of I830. Print of hustings outside Town Hall. Poll results.
