Description
This is the fourth programme for this course designed to provide the social, political and geographical context of the revolutions of 1848 in one area of Europe. This programme is presented by Paul... Ginsborg of the University of York and it concentrates on an area of Italy often neglected by the text books: the North East, and Venice in particular. First there is a film description of Venice then the three geographical divisions of the Veneto, ending with the Dolomites, on the borders of Austria. Paul Ginsborg then describes how the rising in the north east, at first successful, was rapidly confined by the Austrians to a few small areas. He examines, as examples the heroic peasant resistance in the valleys of the Cadore, near Cortina d'Ampezzo and then the siege of Venice itself, as he puts it the "last European city in 1848 to hold out against the forces of reaction".
