Description
A performance of the second half of Sophocles's Oedipus Tyrannus. The programme opens with a shot of a bust of Sophocles, over which Patrick Berthoud introduces the performance, which roughly comp...rises the second half of the play. The most famous of all ancient Greek tragedies concerns King Oedipus's search to discover the murderer of his predecessor, Laius. Eventually he learns that it was he, himself, who killed Laius, that Laius was infact his father and that he has married his mother, Jocasta, and begotten children by her. Patrick Stewart plays Oedipus and Rosalie Crutchley is Jocasta. The style of the performance is intended to emphasise the overall rhythm of the play and show the effect of the formal elements of masks, music and dance. Judith Bingham wrote the original music for the production and Jonathon Taylor did the choreography.
