This programme examines evidence on the ground of the Yorkshire woollen industry both before and after industrialisation. At Mythclmroyd, in the Calder valley, we see different types of houses, tho...se of the home weaver and the later factory worker and manager. above the valley older houses dating from the seventeenth century show how the woollen industry was closely related to agriculture. At Heponstall a village bears witness to once having been an active weaving community. A demonstration of handloom weaving in a restored weaver's house at Golcar shows how a weaver's house would have been organised in the 1840's. In contrast, Dr Harvie looks at back to back housing in Bradford and the idyllic, if not paternalistic, factory and 'village' of Saltaire, different housing showing changing life-styles.

| Footage description: | The programme opens with film of a street in the Yorkshire town of Mytholmroyd, over which Harvie indicates which houses were designed to accommodate weavers' looms. Over a view of Hebden Bridge he describes evidence of the old woollen industry in the area. To camera, Harvie describes how industrialization changed the Yorkshire woollen industry. Film of dwellings that were occupied by isolated weavers, and of someone operating an old loom. Harvie explains how cloth was produced and distributed by small weavers. Weavers cottages at Golcar are examined, as are nearby packhorse roads. Shots of Halifax Piece Hall, over which Harvie describes how wool was bought and sold here. Shots of the canal at Sowerby Bridge. Harvie describes the effect of the new canals on places like the Piece Hall. Views of Hebden Bridge and the Packhorse road to 16th century weaving town of Heptonstall. The buildings of Heptonstall are examined in detail. Still of the last weaver in the town, 1882. The role of methodism and the mechanics institute among Heptonstall weavers is described. Shots of the old roads out of Heptonstall. From the studio Harvie describes the unattractive conditions that weavers lived in. Shots of Manningham Silk Mills and adjoining housing for the work-force. Harvie compares this housing with older weaving cottages. Shots of Saltaire, over which Harvie explains why Salt set up his new town. The congregational Church and the huge factory are examined.
