Description
The programme attempts to pull some threads together at the end of the study block, Introducing History. It shows how the historian can draw on specialists in different historical fields in order ...to gain a greater understanding of, in this case, Professor Marwick's home towns Edinburgh. An art historian and a social historian are invited to discuss changes connected with the expansion of Edinburgh in the eighteenth centuary. Students should compare and contrast their different approaches and use them as a model for increasing their own understanding of a town.

From the studio, Marwick introduces the programme and contributors Alistair Rowan, Professor of the History of Art at University College Dublin, comments on the street plan and arrangement of buildings over shots of Edinburgh's Old and new Towns. He describes in detail architectural features from the 16th and 17th centuries in the Old Town. Christopher Snout, Professor ofEconomic History at the University of Edinburgh, explains the usefulness of historical documents for the study of the old town. Shots of a map of 1647 which he uses to describe the crowded conditions. Over shots of old Edinburgh courts he describes the lack of sanitation. Shots of the new Town plan of 1776, with commentary over shots of Georgian house fronts Rowan describes the building of the first part of the New Town. Using plans of house interiors he describes typical living conditions. Shots of fine frontages are contrasted with Snout's description of these houses' low standard of sanitation. Film of Charlotte Square, over which Rowan describes its construction by Adam. He concentrates on particular features of the facades. Music over shots of early 19th century streets and buildings. Snout uses an extract from the Edinburgh street directory of 1800 to examine the occupations of residents of the New Town. He describes the expansion of this area and explains the attraction of Edinburgh to professional and wealthy classes. Snout explains the effect of the New Town on the distribution of social classess in Edinburgh, illustrating his argument with extract from the censuses of 1801 and 1841. He describes the decline of the Old Town. Shots of the small villages around Edinburgh that began to serve the town during the 19th century. Marwick describes one of these communities as it today. He concludes by drawing lessons about theuse the historian can make of other disciplines. |
