Footage description: The programme opens with pictures of Beethoven and to the opening of his Fifth Symphony. John Rutter talks about Beethoven's career and the importance of the 5th Symphony. John Rutter compares the opening of the 5th Symphony to that of Mozart's 40th Symphony. He likens the opening to a manifesto. Beethoven's use of falling thirds throughout the symphony is examined. John Rutter plays through several early sketches for the symphony. He then looks at the use of the four notes, rhythm, the falling fifths of the horn call and the dramatic context in which these themes occur. He looks at how the two themes interact, how the horn call is interrupted and its falling fifths replaced by the falling third of the motto. He discusses the possible symbolism of the piece and how this represents an important innovation on the part of Beethoven. The programme ends with pictures of Beethoven and to the end of the 5th Symphony. Credits.
