Footage description: The programme opens with several shots of 'art nouveau' pictures shown to the accompaniment of Ravel's 'Introduction and Allegro". John Rutter then introduces the programme and describes the instruments used in the piece. He talks about the problems involved in writing for the harp and describes some of the special effects which can be obtained from the instrument. John Rutter then examines the qualities of the woodwind instruments, flute and clarinet, and those of the string quartet which make them especially effective in this piece. He demonstrates how Ravel builds up layers of sound. He now examines the structure of the piece which follows a traditional sonata form. He gives examples of the main themes in the piece. The Nash Ensemble play the whole of Ravel's "Introduction and Allegro".
