Footage description: The opening sequence shows Lisa Harrow and Patrick Stewart going through the first reading of a scene from Miss Julie. Over part of this sequence Richard Callanan explains how the rehearsal of one scene progressed over a five day period. One exchange between Miss Julie and the servant, Jean, is followed through from the first reading to the final performance. Rehearsal of this exchange includes discussion between actors and director about how best to play it. Further discussion between actors and director over which Stewart bniefly explains his approach at this early stage of rehearsal. The actors read out a large part of the scene. Prolonged discussion between the three about the character of Miss Julie. Harrow gives her views in voice over at one point. Harrow and Stewart play out one exchange from the scene several times, with Callanan adding his comments as the exchange evolves. Discussion from the fourth day of rehearsal, in which they consider how an actor is to get right inside a character. In an extract from the fifth day's rehearsal Stewart and Harrow go right through the scene, but eventually, break off in dissatisfaction with lack of progress. In voice over the actors explain why they are unhappy with the scene. The final studio performance of the scone is given in full. Despite problems in rehearsal it works very well, and the programme ends with theactors expressing their satisfaction over the credits.
