Footage description: A quote from Perriand on the virtues of metal furniture over shots of the Barcelona chair. Benton explains how the programme will examine the claims for the superiority of metal furniture. This will be done by examining techniques. He begins by looking at some traditional wood furniture designed by the Heals - desks etc. He also uses their 1930s catalogues to show general developments. Manufacturing techniques are examined, with shots from modern methods in Heal's factory. The process of veneering is followed. General designs from Heal's work in the 1930s. In a workshop, a carpenter is shown making dovetail joints for a drawer by hand. This is contrasted with a machine cut dovetail joint. Benton moves on to examine steel furniture as done by PEL. He looks at how various chairs and tables were put together. He carries on with some more chairs, such as the SP4, and describes how collapsing of the steel tubes under bending is avoided. The making of the frame for the SP64 chair is shown in detail in the factory, with Benton pointing out how it would have been done in the 1930s. Benton concludes by emphasising that metal furniture still needed a high degree of craftsmanship.
