Description
The programmes traces the development of Viennese modernism during the period before the First World War, concentrating on the buildings of Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos, the paintings of Klimt, Koko...schka, Schiele and Gerstl, and the music and paintings of Schoenberg. It also includes a brief extract from Kokoschka's play, "Murderer, Hope of Women".

Over film of the Austrian Royal family Philip briefly describes the Viennese social order. Viennese taste is described over Makart's painting Triumph of Ariadne. Shots of large 19th century buildings on the Ringstrasse over which a contemporary criticism of Viennese complacency is read. Music by Johann Strauss. Interview with a former pupil of Kokoschka, Georg Eisler. He describes the social tension that existed in Vienna in the early 20th century. Stills of old coffeee houses, over which a quote from Kokoschka about urban unrest is read. Stills of large demonstrations. Still of Freud, Eisler describes the Viennese reaction to Freud. Film of traditional Viennese buildings, over which Philip describes the growth of modernism in architecture. Shots of his poster for his own play Murderer Hope of Women. Part of the play Murderer Hope of Women, is performed. It concerns a dream like conflict between a man and a woman.
