This programme is aimed at preparing students who are embarking on the Arts Foundation Course. Di Collinson together with other Staff Tutors, Simon Eliot and Charles Harrison put over information a...nd ideas about Open University studentship in general and A101 in particular. During the programme they discuss, with illustrations, the expectation of students, tutors and the University in relation to A.101 especially in respect of students skills and abilities, degree level work, tutoring, the tutor student relationship, grading and teaching, working on one's own, the integrated unit of work, essay writing and study time.

Footage description: The programme opens with cartoons depicting students. Di Collinson, Staff tutor in philosophy, introduces the programme. Simon Eliot, staff tutor in literature, explains what he means by "being critical", and both he and Collinson list practical ways in which students can prepare for A101. Collinson and Harrison, staff tutor in Art History, give advice on writing essays. Collinson reads from Jane Eyre and demonstrates the use of a dictionary. Cartooon animations illustrate points made. All the contributors give examples of badly written English and explain what is wrong. Further use of animations. Collinson demonstrates the use of paraphrasing difficult paragraphs and underlining key words. Harrison explains the importance of contactwith tutors and other students. Collinson displays TMAs to show how they are marked. All three contributors give examples of badly written essay passages, and correct these errors. Harrison gives further advice on style and grammer in essays, and he and the others quote examples of bad English. As a contrast, they quote a good passage from T.S. Eliot.
