Footage description: Thomas introduces the programme, and Blachford uses a series of charts to explain what the programme will attempt to do. Thomas logs into an SCS computer terminal and calls up a program for the computer to run. He explains why the terminal can only accept one problem at a time. An animated sequence shows the relationship between three terminals, the front end and the computer's central processing unit. In voice-over Blachford comments on this conceptual model. Blachford goes over this conceptual model of the computer system on a studio diagram. Thomas then uses a physical model of the conceptual model to show how SIMIAN blocks can be used to run a simulation. Using a studio chart, Blachford shows how a SIMIAN simulation model can be put together from the individual blocks. He then runs the simulation on the computer and the results are seen on the VDU. Blachford explains the need for a time-sharing facility in the computer, and an animated sequence shows how the conceptual model could include this. Using the three-dimensional version of the conceptual model, Thomas explains how the addition of an attribute can improve timesharing even further. Blachford shows how these additions to the conceptual model are represented in the SIMIAN simulation model on the studio graphics board. The VDU displays the results when this modified program is run in the computer. Blachford explains the use of ON and OFF blocks, and the program is run once more. He concludes the programme with suggestions for practical study.
