Footage description: Allan Soloman discusses the general rules which operate when scaling or translating graphs. Practising these techniques is a good way of learning more about functions. Mike Crampin works through several transformations. Allan Solomon, using a waving curve, demonstrates four types of transformations, translation along the x axis, scaling in the y direction, reflection in the x axis and translation in the y direction. Mike Crampin discusses scaling in the X direction and then reflection in the y axis. He then sets several problems for the students which involve explaining results can by several transformations. Allan Solomon now introduces the final part of the programme which deals with inverse functions. Two drivers are seen at a garage one asks for £2 worth of petrol the other asks for 4 gallons. Some people are seen exhanging pounds for dollars and dollars for pounds. Tables of logs and antilogs are shown. These are all examples of possible inverse functions. Roger Duke looks at inverse functions, graphically. He works through the example of petrol. He obtains the graphical version of this inverse function by reflecting through a diagonal. Inversions will only work for functions that have inverses. He poses the problem of the sine function, does it have an inverse?
